Divorce, Season 1

(Series Premiere) Frances and Robert--a middle-aged couple in the suburbs of New York City--try to figure out if their marriage is worth saving after a shocking event at their friend Diane's 50th birthday party makes them take a hard look at their own lives.

Frances rushes to intercept Robert before he tells the kids that she's divorcing him. Everyone gathers at the hospital to support Diane, as she waits for news on Nick's condition. In the midst of the chaos, Frances considers finally signing a lease to open her long-planned art gallery.

Robert and Frances attend couples therapy in an effort to see if their marriage is salvageable. Frances gets advice from Dallas, while Robert vents at work. At home, tensions mount as Frances and Robert try to maintain a facade of normalcy for the children. Frances arrives at an epiphany.

In hopes of keeping their split amicable, Frances and Robert meet with a mediator. Frances confides in a co-worker, and Robert gets some surprising financial news.

Robert discovers his lawyer's experience doesn't align with his current needs. Blindsided when she learns that her husband already has legal representation, Frances opens up a little too much in her initial meeting with Max Brodkin, a seasoned midtown divorce lawyer. Diane, Dallas and Frances head to an influential artist's show in hopes that Frances will make a connection for her new gallery, and Robert pitches Nick on his new idea.

Hoping to keep things as normal as possible for the kids, Robert proposes a joint trip to Frances' parents' house during Christmas. Diane and Dallas each endure awkward Christmas Eves; Julian gets an unexpected visitor.

After his failed attempts to 'get back in the saddle,' Robert gets some eye-opening dating advice from new lawyer Tony Silvercreek. Floored when Max shares info about Robert's financial statements, Frances ends up confronting Robert.

Frances is inspired to put her hat in the ring for a new job, but Dallas warns it might cost her dearly if she gets it. Nick raises a possibility with Diane that she thought had already been put to rest. Frances is perplexed about how happy Robert seems to be despite the divorce.

Robert's lawyer insinuates that Frances is a negligent mother. Frances' lawyer encourages her to get more involved, so she drops in on a parents' committee meeting at school. Diane and Nick throw another party, where Dallas finds herself pursued by Robert's plus-one.

Season One Finale. Tensions between Frances and Robert ease after Lila has an emergency, but a cutthroat move by Frances' new lawyer sends Robert on a vengeful path. An encounter at the grocery store crystalizes Diane's feelings about motherhood. Frances makes a confession to her father at her gallery opening and is surprised by an unexpected visitor.
