Nigeria's Bumpy Ride off (and back on) the Subsidy Rollercoaster

Nigeria's Bumpy Ride off (and back on) the Subsidy Rollercoaster

Hi! Welcome to the first episode! For the first one, I wanted to discuss a central struggle, and what’s more central at this time than petrol?

So in today’s episode, my guest, Gboyega, and I discuss Nigeria’s intense history with petrol subsidies + where we are now. It also explores some other countries that have scrapped subsidies successfully and unsuccessfully. At the end, we play a game where I ask Gboyega ridiculous scenarios and he shares how he'd get out of them.

Let me get real: While the content is great, the presentation of this episode a little wonky. I recognised some things I could have done differently so if you’re listening, keep that in mind. I promise it’ll get better!

If you're reading this, ily. Alright enough of that, let's get into it.

    Welcome to Fresh Hell

    Welcome to Fresh Hell

On Fresh Hell we really unpack the pressing socioeconomic and political issues of the day, from petrol crises to impact-driven solutions. I break down complex topics into digestible conversations, not afraid to get into policy weeds yet keeping things casual thanks to my rapport with guests.

Some episodes feature in-depth issue dives, while others spotlight on-the-ground changemakers. My goal is to create an accessible learning space bringing nuance and humanity to news affecting everyday Nigerian life.

Stick around at the end of each episode for my made-up scenarios challenging guests to examine how they might respond in deliciously absurd hypotheticals. As both host and curious citizen, I'm excited to unpack it all with you every week!
