In Millennial History, we relive recent history through the eyes of millennials who were there when it happened. In interviews with musical journalist Andrea Voets, they unpack their ‘deep story’: the reality as they experienced it as children.

Eight episodes take us to the murder of anti-mafia judge Falcone in Sicily, the unwanted ‘Children of the Decree’ of Ceausescu in Romania, The Troubles in Northern Ireland and change and unification in East Germany. The music has been offered by 60 bands from these 4 places. Hundreds of layers of sound & music enable bold and meaningful conversations.

Behind the Scenes of Millennial History

Host Andrea Voets speaks with Mick ter Reehorst from Are We Europe about the making of the show.

How did Voets and composer Luke Deane create these episodes, with hundreds of layers of words & music? Why did she want to turn the hidden perspectives of the underdogs of history into musical journalism? How was she changed by the stories of the millennials?

And most importantly: why should we care?

Change and Unification - Part 2

Change and Unification - Part 2

Inga, Winnie, Burkhard and Henning take us to the 90s: a decade of Change and Unification of East and West into the Germany we know today. They recall how a new, capitalistic system was implemented into the hearts and minds of the former citizens of the GDR: with great force and speed.

Free-floating years full of unknown dangers, in which these Children of the Change learnt to hide and adapt. In a deep analysis of what it means to create history, they reclaim their voices: word by word. In the process, they offer us mindfulness-lessons for modern life & show us how dealing with sudden shifts in ideology & power can support every millennial in the changes that lie ahead.

Change and Unification - Part 1

Inga, Winnie, Henning & Burkhard were born in East-Germany, in the former GDR. They paint the picture of their youths in a country that no longer exists, the social principles of that society, the massive protests in the Autumn of 1989 and the complex feelings towards the fall of the Berlin wall. Did this day really mark the end of German history? With a special role for: bananas.

    The Troubles - Part 1

    The Troubles - Part 1

Chris, Agnes and Michael grew up during the final years of the Troubles: the long and messy conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Northern-Ireland. They help us understand the basics of colonialism -back then and now- and make us part of the sense of danger that colored their early years. In return, we are rewarded with a warm sense of community & a real intensity that comes to life, when everything is at stake.

Children of the Decree - Part 3

Catinca & Joanna dive into sensitive topics of crucial importance. What does it mean to be a good parent? How can you start to trust others, the world, and yourself, when the basis of your existence has been rocked so many times? Feeling unwanted in life itself is a heavy burden to carry. Yet, they show us many ways out: through lots of sensitivity, practical daily ethics & the drive to fight for each other.

Emphatic Listening at its Finest.

To be honest, I am one of the interviewees. I cannot say this is the best podcast ever because I have not listened to every podcast out there; but what I can say is that it is extremely prescient in these times, where so many vastly different experiences cross on a daily basis through human movement. More importantly I wanted to write a review of my experience being interviewed. Andrea is perhaps the best listener and questioner I have ever had the privilege of sharing my identity with. In fact there were only a few questions and then some clarification ones - but the construction was that no one bit of her experience was forced into the narrative, rather the ambassador of experiential storytelling. In a world where we assume for others what we cannot comprehend ourselves and warn people before they hear or see something disturbing (a very sweet sentiment but born of the idea that life can be pristine) the art of listening is at its greatest moment now. Surely we cannot feel tangibly what other experience, but we can get pretty darn close by allowing people to speak honestly and openly without challenge from the listener. As listeners we can invite the discomfort because that makes it a shared experience in the end. To be honest now that it’s all public I realize even more how powerful empathic listening can be: I would have never dreamed to share these things were it not for Andrea and Luke. Their pure connection to listening brought also a lot of incredible music from the lands of the stories being told. All the artist donated their music, a huge ask while we struggled through the pandemic to pay the bills. But people in the end share what they can when they are touched, and the way to be touched is to allow it in. If the content is intense - the music is the resonance of human experience. So a very biased “highly recommended”!
