Episode 6C: The Economics of Anime with Roland Kelts

Episode 6C: The Economics of Anime with Roland Kelts

This is the history part of our Redline episode and today I'm joined by an actual expert guest- author and longtime Japanese culture journalist Roland Kelts. Roland is the author of the very good book Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the U.S., as well as the upcoming (out in July!) The Art of Blade Runner: Black Lotus.  He's also an editor for the journal Monkey, which collects English translations of new Japanese writing, which is publishing a new volume this fall.

Japanamerica profiles a lot of the Anime industry in the mid-2000s, while Redline was in production, and does a great job of breaking down the successes and issues in the industry. We talk about some of those today, as well as how (if) they've changed since. We also get into streaming's effect on the industry and the massive success of the Demon Slayer movie.

Also we learn that Pete Townsend is a very good friend with a very good assistant. I am happy to befriend any rock legend that is listening (Rick Nielsen, I know you've subscribed).

Episode 6B: New Redline Character Pitches and Weeb or Plebe

Episode 6B: New Redline Character Pitches and Weeb or Plebe

It's the comedy part of our Redline episode with Natasha Li and Leah Ly.  We love improv. I can't stress that enough. We love it. And we like it when people make us do it. We also find out the hard way about space cocaine, pitch a much more emotional journey for racers in Redline 2, and find out a SHOCKING SECRET about Sweet J.P.

Then we cash in our bitcoins and look into the benefits of a reverse mortgage, cause being the #1 otaku don't come for free. We play the game Weeb or Plebe where we see who can correctly guess how much different anime-based products cost. And OF COURSE you can play along at home.

    Episode 6: Redline (2009, Japan)

    Episode 6: Redline (2009, Japan)

A new film, and this time it's another 2009 classic- the Japanese sci-fi/Wacky Races fever dream anime film Redline. And by classic, I mean cult classic. I'm joined by Natasha Li and Leah Ly to break down our relationship with anime, pick out our favorite racers and die for JP. This movie rules.

We like wholesome dummies on this podcast.

    Intermission- Spin Us a Yarn

    Intermission- Spin Us a Yarn

Well, it finally happened. Kate Lindsay (The Atlantic) and Dylan Fugel (Sigh) have demanded their own segments. Dylan uses his on history's least problematic safari and Kate gives us a peek behind the SoHo yarn doors.

We also talk the Met Gala, hilarious movie title conventions and of course, who are today's most famous celebrities that no one has any opinion of. It's actually a harder question than you think because so many of Hollywood's elite are famously bad people. But of course we manage to do it, because we're so smart and talented at our jobs.

Episode 5C: José López Rega and Metegol

Episode 5C: José López Rega and Metegol

This is the history part of our The Secret in Their Eyes episode and I'm joined by Dustin Molina. In this one, we talk about two things- one of the architects of the Dirty War in the 1970s in Argentina and also what the director of The Secret in Their Eyes did after making his huge hit. He made the most expensive Argentine movie of all time. By like a lot. Well, I'm sure it's about something really important. He also made a sitcom about a professional womanizer- I love how weird Juan José Campanella  is.

Episode 5B: Boston Boys and No More Secrets

It's the comedy part of our The Secret in Their Eyes episode with Andrea Cardenas and Dustin Molina.  We're the only girls in Boston (The Town), we have low grade Amelie Fever, and we are studying those Euphoria makeup tutorials.

Then we fold our paper hats tight to protect us on the construction site, and play the game No More Secrets where we spoil the secrets of the following INCREDIBLY SECRETIVE MOVIES:
National Treasure: Book of SecretsThe Secret of NIMHSecret ZooSorority SecretsThe Secret If you're like me, you absolute hate secrets and also play along at home.

This podcast prevented a toddler murder!

Before discovering this podcast I was a low-class peasant of poor descent. After listening to all the amazing episodes with witty hosts, I can now say I’m a newly classy and sophisticated person. I can’t believe this wealth of movie knowledge is free to the public. This podcast has even prevented a murder! Instead of pushing my toddler brother down the basement stairs, I was learning about South Korean conglomerates and Peruvian bears! I cant even imagine how much brain damage a 15 second tumble can cause. How can I cause permanent brain damage to a child when I’m too busy being classy and posh on a Sunday afternoon. Thank you for saving our youth.

Funny and engrossing!

Finally, a sophisticated podcast for people like me! I had no idea what a Jim Broadbent was before, but now I feel like I’ve known him for my entire life. The hosts do a great job of explaining what happened and why we should care while keeping things light and funny (or witty). It’s perfect for listening to while you’re NOT 7 years deep into your boyfriend’s ex’s Instagram feed. I definitely did NOT accidentally like a post that she made when she was in middle school, because I was busy being engrossed in this sophisticated podcast on the afternoon of March 13th, 2022.
