Michigan Turkey Season Opener: A Tale of Trials and Triumphs

Michigan Turkey Season Opener: A Tale of Trials and Triumphs

Welcome back to another episode of the Generations Hunt Podcast. In this episode, Matt and Joe dive deep into our turkey hunting experiences here in Michigan, sharing the highs and lows of our recent hunts.

The turkey season is in full swing, and we kicked off the episode discussing the current state of the season, with some areas just opening up for public land hunting.

Our hunting tales began with an opening day filled with excitement and a bit of chaos. Despite a rocky start, forgetting turkey calls and dealing with the elements, we encountered several turkeys, experiencing close calls that kept us on the edge of our seats. We discussed our strategies, the challenges of hunting in dense woods with plenty of downfalls, and the thrill of interacting with these cautious birds.

The next day brought more opportunities and lessons learned. We adjusted our tactics, moving locations to intercept a particularly vocal turkey. After a suspenseful wait and some strategic calling, I managed to harvest a fine turkey, overcoming obstacles like an awkward shooting position and a momentarily misplaced camera.

Throughout the episode, we shared tips on turkey behavior, calling techniques, and the importance of adaptability in the field. We also reflected on the enjoyment of hunting together, the camaraderie.

Matt had a close encounter with a turkey that came within 20 yards, but dense obstacles in the woods blocked his view, preventing a clear shot. As the turkey moved away, Matt tried to call it back but with no luck. Returning to the field to hunt without a blind, Matt's setup with decoys led to the turkey spotting him, causing him to miss the shot. In a last-ditch attempt, Matt took another shot, which turned into a successful harvest, concluding the hunt on a high note.

Gobblers, Blunders, and Shots Fired: A Turkey Hunting Roundtable

Gobblers, Blunders, and Shots Fired: A Turkey Hunting Roundtable

Today, we had a fantastic lineup with Co host Matt, Dr. Mike and Dr. Matt from the In Seezyn Podcast, and Dr. Matt joining us for a turkey season kickoff discussion.
We dove into some hilarious and insightful turkey hunting stories, starting with Joe's first turkey hunt, which unexpectedly turned into a coyote hunt due to his less-than-stellar calling skills. Joe also shared the story of his first turkey harvest with a bow during the fall season, which was a unique experience compared to the spring hunts.
Minkus, our seasoned turkey hunter, recounted his first successful turkey hunt, which was a mix of frustration and triumph. His story highlighted the learning curve involved in turkey hunting and the excitement that comes with finally bagging that first bird.
Dr.Matt shared his first turkey hunting experience, which was a lesson in patience and the importance of staying still. Despite being so close to success, a small movement spooked the turkey away, but the experience left him hooked on turkey hunting.
Dr.Mike shared my own first turkey hunting adventure, which was nothing short of a spectacle. With Minkus calling in a tom that put on an incredible show, I learned the hard way that patience is key, and sometimes you just have to wait for the perfect shot.
We also touched on the challenges and peculiarities of hunting turkeys on public land, including stories of other hunters' antics and the unexpected sounds of Tannerite explosions.
All in all, it was a great episode filled with laughter, learning moments, and a shared passion for turkey hunting. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a newcomer to the sport, there's always something new to learn and experience in the turkey woods.

National Deer Association - Lindsay Thomas

National Deer Association - Lindsay Thomas

Hey everyone, Matt here from Generations of the Hunt. This week, we had a special episode as Joe couldn't join us due to the arrival of his new baby.
To keep things interesting, we invited Dr. Mike from the In Seezyn Podcast, who brought along a fascinating guest, Lindsey Thomas from the National Deer Association (NDA). For those who might remember, the NDA was formerly known as the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) before merging with the National Deer Alliance in 2020.
Lindsey, serving as the Chief Communications Officer for the NDA, shared his insights on a groundbreaking study on buck bedding behavior conducted by Mississippi State University. Contrary to popular belief, the study found that bucks have many more bedding areas than previously thought, with some bucks using up to 87 different bedding areas! This challenges the common hunting strategy of targeting specific bedding sites.
We also touched on the implications of deer management practices, particularly in Michigan. Lindsey highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced buck-to-doe ratio for a more intense and observable rutting season. He also discussed the biological and hunting impacts of skewed ratios, such as less effective rattling and grunting, fewer rubs and scrapes, and the potential for late-born fawns, which can be especially detrimental in northern climates.
Lastly, we delved into the topic of doe harvest rates and how they're crucial for managing deer populations. Lindsey pointed out that Michigan has seen a decline in doe harvests, which could lead to an imbalance in the deer population. He suggested that hunters should consider venison donation programs as a way to manage doe populations while helping those in need.
It was an enlightening conversation that shed light on deer behavior and management, and it's clear that there's much more to consider when it comes to hunting strategies and conservation efforts. Thanks to Lindsey for sharing his expertise, and to Dr. Mike for joining us this week. We'll be back next time with more from the world of hunting and wildlife management. Stay tuned!
