The Gallery, Part 2 with Eric Botbyl

Here’s the episode that budding ceramic artists are probably waiting to hear - the inside scoop on how a gallery is run and how you can get in to one. The short answer is that there aren’t hard and fast rules to this. It might be more important though to hear the story of how a gallery actually gets started and what kind of person has the ambition to build one. Today’s guest tells us about the impetus of Companion Gallery. Welcome Eric Botbyl.

The Gallery, Part 1 with Jing Huang

Finding a gallery that’s the right fit is like dating - there are so many things to consider. Throughout this season we’ve talked to artists that have second jobs that sustain their practice, or did sales themselves. For the full-time artist that relies on the gallery system to make a living we need a dedicated episode. Our guest today talks about being a represented artist at a gallery. Welcome Jing Huang.

We’ve all probably seen it by now. That photograph that looks a little bit off; perhaps it’s the dreamy quality or maybe you noticed an extra finger on a hand…or a missing one - an image created entirely by artificial intelligence. How can clay and A.I. work together? Our guest today walks us through the ins and outs of using this new technology. Welcome Carole Epp.

The Designer, Pt. 1 with Judith Weber

The wonderful thing about ceramics is that many people can experience it with or without an education in it. There are huge swaths of people, much more than makers, that buy and appreciate pottery without the predisposition to why something looks formally good or conceptually resonant - they just like it. Today’s guest designed one of the most iconic and popular teapots in American design history. Welcome Judith Weber.

So far, I’ve interviewed many guests within academia and I want to shift the focus on education from the degree-seeking track to a more community-based environment. My next guest brings life to these environments and is the Chief Program Officer at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Welcome Nick DeFord.

Snorefest

Host is opportunistic, self-indulgent, and worst of all... BORING!!! Placates to guests and backs away from critical questions. Sick of certain names in American ceramics being upheld on a pedestal rather than being held accountable.

ZERO stars.
