    144. How Cuba and The Cold War Made Miami with Vince Houghton and Eric Driggs

    144. How Cuba and The Cold War Made Miami with Vince Houghton and Eric Driggs

This week Justin interviews Vince Houghton and Eric Driggs. Vince grew up in Miami, Florida, and is a veteran of the U. S. Army, where he served in The Balkans. He went on to receive a master's degree and PhD in Diplomatic and Military History from the University of Maryland. He spent more than six years as the historian and curator for the International Spy Museum in Washington, D. C., and is now the director of the National Cryptologic Museum, located on the National Security Agency campus at Fort Meade, Maryland.

Eric also grew up in Miami and earned his bachelor's degree from Brown University and his Master's degree from Harvard Kennedy School.  He has worked as a Cuba analyst at the University of Miami's Institute for Cuban and Cuban American Studies and later served in the US Coast Guard as a Governmental and External Affairs officer. He's currently a congressional liaison for the United States Southern Command, which oversees all US military activities and operations in Central and South America and the Caribbean.

They're here today to tell the story of Miami, Florida in the second half of the 20th century and beyond, and how much the city itself was shaped by the CIA, the CIA. By Cuban exiles, and by the conflicts that define the Cold War.

    140. An Atomic Soviet Spy with Ann Hagedorn

This week Justin talks with Ann Hagedorn. Ann is a former staff writer for the Wall Street Journal and an award winning author of six narrative nonfiction books ranging in topics from thoroughbred horse racing to international kidnapping to unsung heroes of America's anti slavery movement and to the high drama of the tumultuous year 1919.  She's a graduate of Denison University and holds a master's degree from the University of Michigan and Columbia University, plus an honorable honorary doctorate from Denison.  Today, Ann tells the story of an almost completely unknown Soviet spy who infiltrated the Manhattan Project facilities at Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Dayton, Ohio and did so without raising any major suspicions for several years after his return to the Soviet Union.

This week Justin talks with Richard "Ricky" O'Rawe, a former member of the Irish Republican Army. Since leaving the IRA, Ricky has worked as a peace advocate and has written several nonfiction books as well as two novels about The Troubles.  Today Ricky shares the story of Britain's greatest intelligence coup during The Troubles: the recruitment of Freddie Scappaticci, the man who ran the IRA's internal security unit. Awesome all around

Awesome to listen to the in depth stories about things that happen in the world. Also kudos to the fact that you connect with personnel that experienced the story, hearing perspectives is so much more intriguing then just listening to the same person tell stories.

Conspiracy theory garage that is not well researched

I was so excited to listen to this podcast and is this why I am so disappointed. I just listened to episode 142. The Cover up of the Tragic USS Liberty Incident. It is complete garbage. I know about this subject and I could tell right away that is was wrong. Now I won’t trust any of the other episodes. What bothers me most, is the host was eating up the conspiracy. The guest on this show says he didn’t want to continue to going to high school so he joined the navy. His lack of education and low rank shows. He believes President Johnson and Israel had planned years in advance to have the USS Liberty sunk in justification of starting a nuclear war against Egypt. He claims they wanted to blame the sinking on Egypt. He clearly doesn’t understand detente or mutually assured destruction we had with the USSR. This was a tragic friendly fire incident - nothing more. Israel called off the attack once they realized the mistake. If it was the intent sink the Liberty, they clearly wouldn’t have called off the attack and sunk the ship.
