Slaves And Sultans: The Sultanate of Delhi Armchair Historian

A faction at the Yadava court of Devagiri thinks it wise to defy the Sultan in Delhi. Allauddin dispatches an army under the eunuch slave Naib Malik Khafur to prove it wrong in 1306. And I accidentally number the episode 12 when in fact it is 13.

This episode details the military expeditions undertaken by Allauddin Khilji between 1300 CE. and 1310 CE. This includes the sieges of Ranathambhore and Chittor, as well as the conquest of Malwa, Siwana and Gujrat. The Mongols continued to be a menace but came off the worse of several engagements.

This episode covers the first 5 years of the reign of Ala'uddin Khalji- from his occupation of Delhi after his uncle's assassination in 1296 C.E. to the battle of Kili against the Mongols and the rebellion of his own nephew in 1301 C.E.

We return to the narrative this episode and to the house of Balban as his son simply refuses to become Sultan, leaving that responsibility to his own young son. What follows is drama of the first order, full of debauchery, tragedy, rebellion and betrayal. In the end, a new dynasty seizes power and begins to make the first inroads south of the Vindhyas. 

We move eastwards from Delhi over to the Yamuna Ganga Doab, before we turn south onto the Deccan Plateau, taking a bird's eye view of the kingdoms that ruled here at the end of the 13th Century C.E.
