Welcome back to Mindful As A Mother! Today we are welcoming a special guest all the way from Austria, Carina Wahringer. We strongly believe that the most important voices in parenting and living with neurodivergence come from the individuals themselves. Carina is a strong example of a neurodivergent mother with neurodivergent children just trying to wing parenthood like the rest of us. Together, we talk about how Carina knew she’s neurodivergent, what it's like parenting as a neurodivergent individual and parenting neurodivergent children, and her biggest struggles and strengths in neurodivergence.

Playfulness: Stressed brains respond to calm, playful faces and tones of voice. You can counter stress by introducing playfulness. Playfulness can defuse arousal, reduce conflict, and increase connectedness.

Acceptance: Communicating with our words and actions that their feelings, thoughts, urges, and perceptions and accepted completely and trusting that what they are feeling is their truth in that moment. Radically accept what’s in front of you and focus on supporting your child through it regardless of how it triggers you.

Curiosity: be curious about where the behavior comes from. Be curious enough to truly understand your child’s perspective. Open-ended questions or contemplating these questions yourself. Curiosity can also promote their self-reflection on their feelings and behaviors.

Empathy: Genuinely attempt to understand your child’s position. Focus on connection over correction. by demonstrating how difficult an experience might be for THEM, you are comforting them and letting them know they do not have to deal with their distress alone.
