Ep. 158: Mike Flanagan (Hush, Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House, etc.)

    Show Notes:

In this episode we discuss the journey Mike went from being a scared child to a horror-loving adult and how he used horror books as his entryway. He tells me why he thinks horror fans are the more empathetic people out there and the incorrect assumptions people make about the atmosphere of the set of a horror movie or series. We also talk about how his filmmaking has changed since getting sober and how he unwinds after a long day on set since making the change. He also answered some subscriber questions like what non-Stephen King book he’d most like to adapt, his favorite character he’s ever written, and you’ll never guess the inspiration behind the story of Oculus, and so much more!

In this episode we discuss how he got into horror way too young, why he started Chat Film Fest, and what it was like being one of the first film festivals to go virtual during the pandemic. He also told me which films he’s most looking forward to this year and the films that he tends to shy away from.

A Podcast That Brings Guests On To Help Against the Stigma

I'm fairly new to listening to this podcast from Allison Broder. Its premise is simply amazing in the respect that she invites guests who are into the Horror film genre for different reasons. I've been new to the Horror community for about three years now, and I approach it through the storytelling and worldbuilding potential and rich lore that this genre could have just like sci-fi and other genres. For me, Horror is more than it's gore and slicing and dicing. To be brief, I champion a controversial backstory of Michael Myers that gives nuance and transforms his character from a babysitter killer on Halloween to something more; a Chosen One.

You will not be disappointed by tuning into her podcast and I was drawn into this unique Horror podcast for the quality and her effort to help destigmatize this genre.

Out of all the horror options, why this one?

Allison’s short form interview style leaves nothing to be desired. She does her homework, allows her guests to champion their positions, and gets down into the “what” and the “why” of horror, presenting a new take on an old concept: why do we love being scared? Pound for pound, the most consistent podcast week after week, with just enough fluff to give the podcast body, but little enough to allow it to have soul.
