The Dark Ages - A Sleepy History

The Dark Ages - A Sleepy History

The Dark Ages, 476-918 by Charles Oman – The Eastern Emperors
This week’s sleepy episode sees us return to the ‘dark ages.’ When the mighty Roman Empire split in half the western half, the part actually based in Italy, was ruled by a succession of barbarian kings.
But in the East, based in Constantinople, the empire was ruled by a number of Emperors who considered themselves Roman and had a period of relative peace.
While you lie and wait for sleep to come, let me tell you about them.

The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories by Lord Dunsany – The Fall of Babbelkund

The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories by Lord Dunsany – The Fall of Babbelkund
Lord Dunsany can be relied on for something whimsical and mystical, and this week’s reading of The Fall of Babbelkund, an ancient and wondrous city. As you try to doze off the protagonist meets several people telling of the wonders and mysteries of the city carved from a mountain.
Will you still be awake when they meet the prophet going to spell doom to Babbelkund?
Maybe, but you will probably be sleeping when the protagonist gets to where they’re going, only to find the whole city gone.

The Last Man by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

The Last Man by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

The Last Man by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
I was worried picking what was supposedly the first post apocalyptic novel for this podcast, but it’s taking forever to get there and we pick up this week with out protagonist returning home with his sick friend, and a budding romance with the distractingly named young woman Idris.
But Idris and Adrian’s noble mother does not approve of the match up and she has something up her sleeve.
Both an interesting read and a boring on so I’m sure you will be asleep soon enough.

Birds and their nests by Mary Howitt – Nightingales, Larks and More Oh My!

Birds and their nests by Mary Howitt – Nightingales, Larks and More Oh My!
We pick up with this listener favourite and learn the mating and nesting habits of several birds, including beloved songbirds like Nightingales, Skylarks and more.
We learn how they migrate, about attempts to introduce some of the birds to new areas and the parenting habits of birds like plovers.
A lot of cute stories in here, with the occasional darkness of true nature.

handrrwmaas ,

I’m conflicted

I’ve listened to a few episodes and really like the reader’s voice and speed. Calming topics combined with classic works are just right because the older language is complex enough to distract the mind. I really like that. The 7 minute intro, however, I am not a fan of at all. It would be lovely if there was one intro episode and the sleep stories were free of all that repetitive chatter. If I create a playlist of episodes, like you suggest in the intro, I will be dreading the 7 minutes at the beginning of each episode reminding me that I’m still not asleep. I wish this could be corrected because this podcast is just wonderful otherwise. Took off only one star for this complaint, even though I think it’s a pretty significant drawback.

JenInHouston ,

The talent is good.

Voice, style, pace, content all great! Sound quality not so much. I cannot listen through blue tooth speaker it sounds muddled becomes in decipherable. I can only listen through my phone speaker which is not always loud enough for me. The long intro is a bit much. Just briefly say the podcast relies on listeners and list the site or sites where they can contribute and move on. I know it’s got to be financed but the manner is a bit much. I am a fan of the podcast though I do like it. I do go to sleep much easier. Thank You.

GeeEL91 ,

It’s mellow

He’s got the right tone, pacing, and content to provide a sleepy pace.
