Dr. Jennie Byrne completed her MD and PhD in Neurophysiology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She completed her psychiatry residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She has worked in many roles during her long career and continues to practice psychiatry part-time. She has held advisory and executive leadership roles as well.
Dr. Byrne is the founder and CEO of Constellation PLLC and the Co-Founder and Advisor at Belong Health. She has been called a “Triple Threat” because of her work as a physician leader, a healthcare executive, and an entrepreneur. She is a brain and behavior specialist with extensive training and experience in psychiatry, psychotherapy, and neuroscience.
Her book Moral Injury: Healing the Healers illuminates the often-overlooked concept of moral injury, offering a fresh perspective on the challenges facing healthcare professionals today. Dr. Byrne asserts that the issue lies not in individuals' resilience but in the systemic factors perpetuating moral injury within healthcare systems. Drawing parallels between healthcare and other workplaces, the book highlights the damaging consequences of outdated models and language.
During our interview, Dr. Byrne describes the hallmark features of moral injury and provides examples of colleagues, clients, and patients who have experienced it. She offers a metaphor for understanding moral injury. She closes our interview with examples of ways to help others overcome moral injury at both a personal level and as leaders in a large organization.
