    Walking Into Machine Guns

    Walking Into Machine Guns

In this episode we’ll look at the highly controversial and often much misunderstood story of the frontal assault on the trenches of the Western Front. We’ll consider why and how it happened, if it was as haphazard and pointless as we are commonly led to believe and address the popular belief that allied commanders repeatedly sent brave men, walking, across no-man’s-land in futile attacks against enemy machine guns.

Why did the armies keep attacking?

Why did the armies keep attacking?

Why did the armies keep attacking? In this episode, we’ll examine one of the enduring controversies of the First World War - why did the Allies keep attacking the Western Front when all the advantages seemed to lie with the defender? What informed these decisions, were there other options, and how did these choices play out on the battlefield?

    Episode 23: Barbed Wire

    Episode 23: Barbed Wire

This week, in a particularly geeky episode, Dan and Spencer explore the much understudied and perhaps underappreciated importance of barbed wire on the Western Front. Often overlooked as a minor inconvenience, it did in fact shape much of the story of the First World War.

Not all Quiet on the Western Front, for sure!

Recently discovered this podcast in my constant search for interesting history pods. Hit the jackpot with this one as the two hosts are pleasant to listen to and are covering some unique topics one of which was all about tunneling and mine warfare. Fascinating and I learned many formerly unknown aspects and special language such as “pit sense”, “clay kicking”, and many others. If you want to learn more about WWI on the western front, this is a show to add to your list.

Fascinating, enoyable-to-listen to World War One History

I have listened this podcast series since the beginning and can highly recommend it. The hosts are highly knowledgeable and pass on their excellent information in an easy, often humorous manner. The show seems to have a British emphasis given the background of the hosts, but, as an American, I have not found anything lacking. I like how to the hosts go into such great detail during the episodes. Indeed, the quality of podcast has led me to support it on Patreon. The podcast has greatly increased my knowledge of the First World War, the effects of which we are still living with today. It would be great if they could do a few episodes on aspects of the war at sea and fighting in the Middle East.
