Atomic Veterans: Training for the Final War

Atomic Veterans: Training for the Final War

During the era of atmospheric nuclear testing, hundreds of thousands of American servicemen were made to participate in nuclear tests to prepare for fighting an atomic war. Thousands more were exposed to deadly radiation while cleaning up after nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands. These men were prevented from talking about their experiences for decades after, even to their doctor.

    Marshall Islands: Paradise Interrupted

    Marshall Islands: Paradise Interrupted

From 1946 through 1958, the US detonated 67 nuclear weapons in the Marshall Islands, with an explosive force equal to 1.6 Hiroshima bombs every day for 10 years. The Marshallese are still dealing with the consequences to this day.

Lingering radiation has caused numerous health problems and wiped out much of the traditional lifestyle of fishing and farming, leading to a dependence on unhealthy imported food and an epidemic of obesity and diabetes. Many Marshallese emigrated to America, where maintaining traditional culture was even more difficult.

The health challenges from their lifestyle changes led to American Marshallese being tragically vulnerable to the Covid epidemic.

Scaling the Mountain: The Quest for a Nuclear-free World

Scaling the Mountain: The Quest for a Nuclear-free World

At the start of the 21st century, several groups began efforts aiming not just to control nuclear weapons but to eliminate them altogether. The so-called Gang of Four, William Perry, George Shultz, Sam Nunn and Henry Kissinger, wrote numerous powerful op-eds, urging us to work towards a world without nuclear weapons. Bruce Blair turned from academics to founding Global Zero, dedicated to the same goal. And a coalition of activist groups formed the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, ICAN. In 2017, the United Nations adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and ICAN was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Fascinating, important public service

Thank you for doing this. Please keep it up, especially the focus on the technical, institutional, and psychological underpinnings of how nuclear war could happen by “mistake”. I think one of the main reasons we as a society are less afraid of nuclear war than we should be is that we cling to the belief that nuclear weapons are at all times securely under the control of human decision makers possessing full information. We need to collectively disabuse ourselves of this belief.

Glorified William Perry podcast

I completely agree with the premise of the podcast, which is the extreme danger of nuclear weapons. Although the show can present great insights to both the horrors of nuclear warfare, as well as the challenges to nuclear disarmament, way too much of the show is spent on highlighting Perry’s work. From highlighting his legacy to an unbalanced view of all Republican legislation, Perry’s granddaughter does not do the topic justice. I understand that the narrative is biased having been a relic from the Clinton presidency. And justifiably, actions by certain Republican lawmakers haven’t helped. However the podcast refuses to evaluate antagonistic players on the world stage. The discussion of North Korea is extremely disingenuous, and there’s no mention of India or Pakistan. Lisa Perry would’ve been much better as a biographer of William Perry, instead of posing a podcast on serious discussions of nuclear warfare, or nuclear weapons escalation.

Vaccine for Human Stupidity

This is the best podcast I’ve ever heard confirming undeniably how moronic Homo sapiens and the human race are…absolutely amazing content! Thank you!
