Episode 1 - Master and Commander (Part 1)

Welcome to the Lubber's Hole - Ian & Mike get started with Master and Commander, the first in the series.  We talk about the origins of the Aubrey/Maturin books, the first encounters between Stephen and Jack, and the emerging story of James Dillon.  The first connections emerge between the books and the great Peter Weir movie, and we dodge the subject of goats, sadly. Jack has a ship, Pullings is a lieutenant, but all is still not well ... a dogged and unhappy crew, a fragile friendship, financial hardship, deceptions and dalliances all threaten Jack and Stephen's happiness and safety.  As the plot tangles them more and more deeply, an unlikely candidate emerges to cut the knots of jealousy and set them free.  Who can it be?   Ch 7-9

Greatly enhanced my reading experience.

You guys brought so much insight into details of the cannon that would have gone right over my head. Please keep going. At the end of the series I hope you guys just start again and go even more in depth!

21 gun salute for Ian and Mike

I just binged the entire podcast to date over the last couple of weeks. I love how engaged the hosts are with the nuances of character and story in the Patrick O’Brian books. They do a great job of teasing out the references and Easter eggs, and it’s only enhanced my enjoyment of these fine novels. They’re interviewees are always amazing and the focus on the female characters and female fans are on point. Diana Villiers is a personal favorite and they give her character the amount of attention she deserves. Three cheers from the gun deck for this prodigious great podcast.
