Drone Beat Inside Unmanned Systems

Episode #16 features Karen DiMeo, Head of Policy and Government Affairs at GE Aviation’s AiRXOS. We explore unmanned aircraft systems traffic management (UTM) as the foundational stepping stone toward the next generation of integrated air traffic management, as well as the technical and regulatory challenges of having small drones, large piloted passenger drones, and conventional aircraft operating in the same airspace.

Episode #15, the third in our series on UAM vehicles features Luiz Valentini, eVTOL engineer at Embraer discussing the challenges that surround making unmanned air vehicles part of daily life. We'll explore how the drone industry can come together with certification authorities to create a base of data and understanding to ensure these vehicles are safe and adequate for eventual electric passenger missions, and how integrators can gain acceptance and prove viability and value of 'drone sky taxis' in the urban environment.

Episode #14, the second in our new series covering urban air mobility, features Kate Fraser, Head of Aviation Policy for Uber Elevate. UAM is the next step in transportation, and this episode features an in-depth discussion around urban air mobility issues from an integrator perspective. We also explore the need for public and government acceptance and buy-in, and Uber’s crawl-walk-run approach toward launching a full multi-modal mass air transportation experience featuring the UberCopter.

Dr. Parimal “PK” Kopardekar, the "Father of Unmanned Traffic Management" and Director of NASA’s Ames Research Center covers the history of urban air mobility and examines UAS deployment strategy, urban air mobility maturity levels (UML), and NASA’s role in bringing together aviation communities for the common goal of realizing UAM.

Episode #9 features Phil Kenul, Rear Admiral (retired), who is the Senior Vice President, Aviation and Operations at TriVector and Chair, F38 UAS Committee ASTM International who discusses various technical Remote ID solutions for drones and how they will integrate into the eventual Unmanned Traffic Management system

Episode #12 delivers an in-depth interview with Gabriel Cox, Intel Corporation, Drone System Architect, Global UAS ID Lead, and Chairman, ASTM F38 Remote ID Work Group. Mr. Cox provides details on ASTM standards for Remote ID and what role solutions including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LTE and ADS-B will likely play in assuring safe drone operations.
