Katrina. Ferguson. Oak Creek. In America, a local tragedy can spark a national conversation. But what happens after the national news cycle moves on? On this podcast, we’ll visit communities whose tales of adversity have put them on the map and we’ll explore what “survival” in America really looks like. What does it mean to survive when your classmate has been gunned down by a cop? When you’re surrounded by an opioid epidemic? When your child is told she can’t use the bathroom that corresponds with her gender identity? Because when the controversies of our time become politicized, we can’t forget about the people affected by them every day.

Bonus: How One Senator Found His Calling In The Wake Of Tragedy

Instead of a new episode of I’m Still Here, we’re running an episode from another HuffPost podcast called Candidate Confessional. It’s a show about tough defeats, and on this episode, hosts Sam Stein and Jason Cherkis spoke to Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut.
Shortly after he won election to the senate in 2012, 20 first graders were shot dead at Sandy Hook Elementary school. The tragedy, which took place in Murphy’s old district, fundamentally changed him and his career, but it didn’t change gun laws.

Great idea, great podcast

It is really a wonderful thing to continue talking about issues that everyone else has forgotten.
My only problem with it is not with the subject matter, but the reporter's voice. I'm not sure her name, the one who does the intro (which is kinda annoying they do that intro every episode instead of theme music or a short intro, I don't need to hear trailer advertisement for a podcast I am already listening to). I know that complaining about the reporter's voice is pretty shallow, but her vocal fry makes her seem less knowledgable or reliable.

Have you got anything that has not been fossilized?

Have you heard the one about a pandemic? For a paper that busts their way in to everything you read on every media platform, it seems like you would have your own podcast.

Everyone Matters ,

Too Liberal for Liberals

I’m considered by nearly everyone I know to be too liberal, and I couldn’t listen to any of the episodes all the way to the end. These are stories of self defined disenfranchised people who don’t understand systems only work when everyone puts in their best effort. They are [of color/female/chronically ill/an immigrant/etc] who expect their lives to be made easy. I stopped each episode at the point I could no longer stand listening to how miserable they were and how unable they were to find their own strength.
