Adapted from Luigi Pirandello’s Novelle per un anno, the film presents five short stories all set on the island of Sicily. “The Other Son” deals with a mother’s disdain for one of her offspring. Two of her sons have moved to the United States and neither communicates with their family back home. The one son who remained has tried to please his mother, but as viewers learn in flashback that may be a lost cause. “Moonsickness” describes the effect that a full moon has on a man and his wife. Once a month Batà (Claudio Bigagli) finds himself howling at the moon like a werewolf. In an effort to protect his frightened wife, Sidora (Enrica Maria Modugno), Batà allows the handsome Saro (Massimo Bonetti) to stay with his wife during these episodes, but this arrangement may have a drastic effect on their marriage. “The Jar” is a comedic episode involving a rather sticky situation. When a valued jar breaks, Zi’ Dima (Franco Franchi) is hired to fix it and he gets a little too into his work. In “Requiem,” a group of farmers living in a remote area ask if they can bury their dead locally instead of in the town which is a day away, but their request is denied. And in “Conversing with Mother,” Luigi Pirandello (Omero Antonutti) listens to his mother (Regina Bianchi) retell a story from her youth.
