Publisher Description

From Rob Thomas, the creator of the television series and movie phenomenon Veronica Mars, comes the first book in a thrilling mystery series that picks up where the feature film left off.

Ten years after graduating from high school in Neptune, California, Veronica Mars is back in the land of sun, sand, crime, and corruption. She’s traded in her law degree for her old private investigating license, struggling to keep Mars Investigations afloat on the scant cash earned by catching cheating spouses until she can score her first big case.

Now it’s spring break, and college students descend on Neptune, transforming the beaches and boardwalks into a frenzied, week-long rave. When a girl disappears from a party, Veronica is called in to investigate. But this is no simple missing person’s case; the house the girl vanished from belongs to a man with serious criminal ties, and soon Veronica is plunged into a dangerous underworld of drugs and organized crime. And when a major break in the investigation has a shocking connection to Veronica’s past, the case hits closer to home than she ever imagined.

In Veronica Mars, Rob Thomas has created a groundbreaking female detective who’s part Phillip Marlowe, part Nancy Drew, and all snark. With its sharp plot and clever twists, The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line will keep you guessing until the very last page.

Perfect Novel For Fans

The Thousand Dollar Tan Line is the perfect continuation of the Veronica Mars series following the movie released just a couple of weeks ago. Unlike the movie, which was mostly fan service, this novel brings the next chapter of Veronica's life in a new way. This is the first story in which the main mystery does not revolve around one of Veronica's personal relationships. Though there is a surprising character return from the television series, the victims in this novel aren't connected to Veronica personally. As a result, the emotional impact is not as present as in the big cases of Veronica's past. However, this novel does an amazing job of presenting genuine twists throughout the entirety of the novel. Just when you think you have it all figured out, this novel will completely turn everything around. That's one of the novel's strengths. It is very well written and fits completely in the Veronica Mars universe. The novel is not without faults, however. Aside from the previously mentioned lack of emotional impact, the novel is very slow at the beginning and middle of the novel. Some chapters seem to be mostly filler. Also, this movie is not filled with quips and one liners like the screen adaptions are (though there are plenty of laugh out loud moments). The novel is written as a serious crime novel. The mystery gets surprisingly dark and the corruption in the sheriff's office introduced in the movie is shown in even greater detail. As a whole, the novel is excellent. I would highly recommend fans of the show to read this novel and if possible, listen to the audiobook narrated by Kristen Bell. She does really bad accents for each character that are hilarious (and even brings back the classic Martina Vasquez voice when reading the lines of the real Martina), but there's truly nothing like hearing her read Veronica's dialogue as she is Veronica herself. Very good novel and I can't wait for the next one!

It makes you miss V Mars even more.

If you're a fan of Veronica you need to read this book. While it starts slow, the story envelopes you in that world, drawing from Mars lore and bringing in new elements. It's a great mystery and a reminder as to why we love Veronica.

Pretty good

I guess I have to say that I was disappointed with the fact that the story was told in the third, rather than first, person. The TV series and movie always were in the first person for exposition, so I wanted that perspective.

I was sad to see that there wasn't much of Logan and felt having him at least somewhere near the end of the story would have been nice.

All in all, the story was, of course, very much like the show and a decent read. I'll read another, but still think it would be much better it it were told from the first person perspective!
