Take one mischievous child, add a handful of wicked adults, flavor it all with Roald Dahl’s wondrous imagination, and you have delicious fun. A clever orphan boy and his doting grandmother are staying at a lovely seaside hotel—where it just so happens that England’s nasty, child-hating witches are holding their annual convention. The sorceresses’ only item of business: eradicating every last British boy and girl. We love how Dahl isn’t afraid to pack major chills into his books (like the witches’ dastardly plan to turn kids into mice who’ll be exterminated by their own parents!). As Dahl’s nameless seven-year-old hero sets out to put a stop to the witches, the adventure picks up steam. Even if you’ve seen the movie adaptations of The Witches, you don’t want to miss out on all the charming, witty details in this timeless read. Spoiler alert: This one might even be better than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!
