A Tale for a True Sailor
“The Caine Mutiny” is perhaps the greatest characterization of the US Navy I’ve ever read, but not on the surface. There are of course antiquated ships and terms exclusive to the navy in the 1940s, but the behaviors of the enlisted, officers, and their reactions, the vulgar, distasteful gossip of the sailors while underway, and all the tangents Herman Wouk decides to describe about the sailors remains absolutely true of our navy today. As a sailor, I can attest that this is a must read for anybody wanting to know about life onboard a “small boy”. After all, a DMS and a DDG aren’t too different in terms of amenities…and in regard to the mutiny…you’re just going to have to start reading, become a sailor onboard the Caine, and experience it yourself. 5 Stars without a doubt.

I first read this book in the 1950’s. The characters and story have stayed with me. It is one of my favorite books of all time.
