The McElroy family ups their metafictional wackiness in this comic adaptation of their podcast of same name, which revolves around live performance of role-playing game The Adventure Zone. The comic follows Magnus (human), Taako (elf), and Merle (dwarf) as they fight their way deep into dungeons filled with monsters, mayhem, and whatever else the dungeon master throws at them. In between exploring and fighting, the heroes amuse themselves by antagonizing one another, pontificating on dwarves' musical preferences, and cussing out the dungeon master, who occasionally pops into the story to give direction, insult the players, or congratulate himself on his own crafty storyline. In the tradition of RPGs, illustrator Carey Pietsch (Mages of Mystralia) introduces each new character with a trait sheet, helping the reader to quickly get up to speed on their quirks. Pietsch delivers the essence of role-playing, enhancing many scenes' ambience and transforming the book into a delightful visual experience that balances exposition and action.

Good its the best
I’m 8 so I really like it nice swear words!
Great for anyone 10 and up!
I am a huge fan of the podcast (The Adventure Zone) and this is a great adaptation. There are changes of course, but the changes fit the medium very well.
For anyone who isn’t into the podcast, and just seeing this in their recommendations, I would strongly suggest giving this a shot, if you like comics with dramatics but without a ton of grit.
If the series continues (which I think it will, petals to the metal is already in the works at the moment) then this is a great series for anyone. It’s going to get heavy, but in a way that’s great for the heart.
Please, at least give it a chance. Carey’s artwork and Clint, Griffin, Justin, and Travis’s storytelling and choices are a wonderful wonderful combination.

It’s an awesome, funny story, I’ll definitely read it again. If you like fantasy with lots of wit and shenanigans, you’ll probably love this book.
