OS X Mountain Lion: the Missing Manual by Pogue

1. YOU CAN READ THIS BOOK IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN iOS DEVICE!! When you buy the book it downloads into iTunes in a folder named Pogue as the author in Books under iTunes. COPY the book and put the copy where it is convenient. NOW download a FREE ePub reader. Try Nook, Kindle, Kobo, Calibre, Stanza, or Kitabu for a start. There are others. ALSO Firefox has an extension that reads ePub books. Use Firefox help to learn how to activate it.
I'm disappointed that Apple does not state this in their iTunes requirements. At least they could have said that it is RECOMMENDED to use iBooks. If you have ereader like Nook or Kindle you may be able to read this book on them if you can load it to your reader or "cloud" account.
2. As for the book being DULL…oh come on. It's a reference book! CONCENTRATE on it.
Cheers.

Great book -- buy it!

I have owned every copy of The Missing Manual series that David Pogue has ever written on OS X. I look forward to it almost as much as I look forward to the actual release of the new software. Pogue writes in a down-to-earth / no nonsense approach that is as full of knowledge as it is wit and charm. You have never had this much fun learning about computers if you've never read his Missing Manual books.

David has made this another great book that thoroughly goes through the changes from Lion and shows the major differences so that you know what's new (great for those who know a lot about OS X anyway and just want to start living the good life with Apple's new features. We also get to see minor differences so that we don't hit a brick wall when we're asked to save our latest document in iCloud! Thanks, Dave!

The book is nicely laid out and has excellent screenshots so following along is a no brainer. I just park myself in front of my computer with my iPad and start following along! Super easy and convenient!

Speaking of… this copy is the first one that I've read on my iPad so it's quite a bit different. And by different, I mean vastly better! The iPad is significantly lighter than the actual book; it's easy to change and enlarge fonts based on your need; take it with you on planes and bone up on All-Things-OS X which you most surely wouldn't schlepp the real one along. And you can have multiple copies of the book. I've installed it on my iPhone and iPad along with my wife's iPhone and iPad. 4 copies! That can be used at anytime. Someone needs help, boom, pull out your iPhone! Now, I prefer the iPad way but it's great to know that I have the great NY Times Tech guru in my pocket, so to speak, whenever trouble pops up.

Unlike the review before that said "no where I can I find that the DL was going to be in ePub", I actually read the Requirements which stated that the this book required (and can ONLY BE VIEWED) using iBooks on an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. I generally do a little reading whenever the price of something is a more than a couple of bucks. I can't imagine making a $17 purchase and not bothering to read the Requirements that are 3 inches from the BUY BUTTON. The reason that iBooks and Apps don't have the Requirements every where is because most (logical) people understand that they can only be used on iOS devices. Do I wish that iBooks could be read on a Mac? Sure,… but not for my benefit. Who wants to read a book on huge monitor?! I'd rather read it on a book-like device!

This is a great book and truly is the book that should have been in the box!

The Missing Manual

I agree with Deceptive Ad. I have OS X Lion on my MacBook Pro and after downloading (after paying for) this book, I find that I cannot open it on my laptop.
