Publisher Description
In this never-before-published historical romance, New York Times bestselling author Kerrelyn Sparks returns to the 18th century, where the fight for freedom is as dangerous as the fight for love.
Between searching for the missing Munro sisters and South Carolina being all but lost to the British, Captain Matthias Thomas has more important things to worry about than finding a bride. But his mother has other ideas. When Matthias finds a beautiful woman in his bed who claims to be his betrothed, he is suspicious of her identity … and determined to discover the truth.
Caroline Munro had few options. The British burned down her home, and now, traveling with her very pregnant sister, Caroline is pretending to be someone she’s not so they can have a safe place to rest. But she didn’t count on a matchmaking matron or her rogue of a son … and certainly never dreamed she would fall in love with a spy.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In the middle of the Revolutionary War, Capt. Matthias Murray Thomas is freed from British imprisonment by Scotsman Jamie Munro, who charges him with locating Munro's daughters, Caroline and Virginia. The two have taken shelter at Matthias's family plantation under assumed names; he meets them there when he goes to check on his mother. Miscommunications, omissions, and deceptions follow as Matthias and Caroline try to keep their secrets in the face of the ever-present British army. Sparks (Vampires Gone Wild) creates a detailed representation of war-ravaged South Carolina. Cameos from historical figures such as Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion and Gen. Cornwallis lend verisimilitude, while enlightened attitudes toward women and slavery help keep the story palatable for modern readers. The romance between Matthias and Caroline is sometimes overshadowed by the war, but it's always the core of the story. Fans of Sparks's paranormal romances may be surprised by the lack of vampires, but will not be disappointed.

Less Than A Gentleman
If I have never read The Forbidden Lady, the prequel to Less Than A Gentleman I would have fallen more than head and heels over this novel.
The one little problem I had with this novel was that the character traits and qualities of Caroline and Matthias were all to similar to Virginia and Quincy. I felt like I was reading another novel about Ginny and Quin, which I suppose is fine but I wanted more of air headed Carolina and rebellious Matthias.
As for the plot, I loved it. It was exciting, I was smiling like an idiot the whole time, dangerous, which is more or less what I expected, and really sweet.
My favorite character would have to be the Scottish major, James Munro. He's a halarious man and the greatest plot twist. I would love to read a novel about his love story.
Overall, I loved it. I would truely recommend it only after The Forbidden Lady though.
