Now a Hulu TV series starring Zoë Kravitz!

"I've always loved Nick Hornby, and the way he writes characters and the way he thinks. It's funny and heartbreaking all at the same time."—Zoë Kravitz

From the bestselling author of About a Boy, A Long Way Down and Dickens and Prince, a wise and hilarious novel about love, heartbreak, and rock and roll.

Rob is a pop music junkie who runs his own semi-failing record store. His girlfriend, Laura, has just left him for the guy upstairs, and Rob is both miserable and relieved. After all, could he have spent his life with someone who has a bad record collection? Rob seeks refuge in the company of the offbeat clerks at his store, who endlessly review their top five films; top five Elvis Costello songs; top five episodes of Cheers.

Rob tries dating a singer, but maybe it’s just that he’s always wanted to sleep with someone who has a record contract. Then he sees Laura again. And Rob begins to think that life with kids, marriage, barbecues, and soft rock CDs might not be so bad.

High Fidelity

Good book! Fun reading! I loved the narrators sense of humor and British terminology. He is a really screwed up middle age male who cannot decide whether he wants to marry his girlfriend but is heartbroken when she moves out of their apartment. He owns a failing business and is still trying to decide what to do with is life.

Hi Entertainment!

Quite simply, this is one of the funniest and most entertaining books I have ever read. Anyone who has ever experienced the highs and lows of relationships and loves music will relate to this story and will find themselves laughing out loud at Hornby's insights and wit. Everyone that I have recommended this to loved it!

What Makes This Book So Brilliant…

From start to finish, Hornby creates a breathtakingly realistic and brutally honest account of Rob’s constant inner musings. Everything he thinks of himself and everything he feels about himself and others is laid bare while the words that actually come out of his mouth and his actions (and INactions) are all attempts to conceal what’s going on with him inside. He constantly attempts to hide his true insecure, confused, and directionless self from others, an act of self-preservation that’s very familiar to most people. The result of this disparity between Rob’s thoughts vs. his words and actions is often hilarious from an outsider’s perspective as well as cringe worthy for Rob, the other characters, and the readers alike. For example: in a moment of musing, Rob looks around at the other people in the room and runs down a list of what he believes makes them better than him. He mentally states “…they are competent and I am incontinent…,” a musing that indicates that he feels like he’s an infant among adults. Haven’t we ALL felt exactly like that at some point in our own adult lives?
