NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY BUZZFEED AND THE INDEPENDENT • Ranking alongside George R. R. Martin as a groundbreaking master of fantasy, Robin Hobb delivers the second book in her long-awaited Fitz and the Fool trilogy.

The harrowing adventures of FitzChivalry Farseer and his enigmatic friend the Fool continue in Robin Hobb’s triumphant follow-up to Fool’s Assassin. But Fool’s Quest is more than just a sequel. With the artistry and imagination her fans have come to expect, Hobb builds masterfully on all that has gone before, revealing devastating secrets and shocking conspiracies that cast a dark shadow over the history of Fitz and his world—a shadow that now stretches to darken all future hope.

Long ago, Fitz and the Fool changed the world, bringing back the magic of dragons and securing both the Farseer succession and the stability of the kingdom. Or so they thought. But now the Fool is near death, maimed by mysterious pale-skinned figures whose plans for world domination hinge upon the powers the Fool may share with Fitz’s own daughter.

Distracted by the Fool’s perilous health, and swept up against his will in the intrigues of the royal court, Fitz lets down his guard . . . and in a horrible instant, his world is undone and his beloved daughter stolen away by those who would use her as they had once sought to use the Fool—as a weapon.

But FitzChivalry Farseer is not without weapons of his own. An ancient magic still lives in his veins. And though he may have let his skills as royal assassin diminish over the years, such things, once learned, are not so easily forgotten.

Now enemies and friends alike are about to learn that nothing is more dangerous than a man who has nothing left to lose.

Hobb is the Tolkien of our times

This is the best book ever! Maybe next to the third book to come.

Meh...

I guess I enjoyed the book. But I can't help being mad that the only exciting part was toward the end. 9/10s of the book was filler between the end of the first one and the last 75 pages of this one. I wish someone had written a review like this instead of blind praise. I wouldn't have wasted my money.

Can't wait for the next one!

I received an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review.

This was quite the read. It is always interesting coming into a universe that is several books in, especially when it is the middle part of a trilogy within that universe. I have read Assassin's Apprentice and (more recently) the 4 Rain Wilds books, so I am at least somewhat familiar with her work. Reading this book made me want to get everything she has ever written and sit down (uninterrupted) and get caught up.

I love Robin Hobb's writing style. It feels effortless to read without feeling like it has been dumbed down. Once I got into the story a bit, I didn't want to stop reading it. After 700+ pages I was still sad to see it end. I felt this way when I read the Rain Wilds books too.

I would recommend reading some other of her works before jumping into this one (or at least the first one in this Trilogy). I think that if you don't, you will still enjoy the story, but you will get much more out of it after having invested some time in getting to know the characters of her world better.

I thought the pace of the story was good. I liked most of the interactions between the characters, although Fitz's insistence on doing everything alone annoyed me at times. I thought it fit his character well enough, but it was infuriating. The names also drove me crazy for a while, until I had gotten used to them. Perserverance, Dutiful, Patience, etc. I don't know what it was that bothered me, but it stopped after I had gotten into the story more.

I liked how you could feel the consequences of actions that took place in other stories. The world feels dynamic, not stagnant. It is a living, breathing world (which I always appreciate).

I also really like the Skill and Wit systems in play in this world. They are similar to magic in other fantasy stories, but still have their own unique feel.

Highly recommended for fans of fantasy, especially those that enjoy epic fantasy with an emphasis on world building.
