When Earl Alden is found dead, dangling from a wind turbine, his wife, Missy, is arrested. Unfortunately for Joe Pickett, Missy is his much-disliked mother-in-law, and he’s not sure what to do—especially since it looks like Missy is guilty as sin.
But then things happen to make Joe wonder: Is Earl's death what it appears to be? Is Missy being set up? He has the county DA and sheriff on one side, his wife on the other, his estranged friend Nate on a lethal mission of his own, and some powerful interests breathing down his neck. Whichever way this goes, it’s not going to be good...
“I would say that C. J. Box is at the top of his form, but the top just keeps moving ever upward...A nonstop thrill ride not to be missed!”—Bookpage
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett must try to prove that his despised mother-in-law, Missy Alden, isn't guilty of murdering Earl Alden, her fifth husband, in Box's searing 11th Joe Pickett novel (after Nowhere to Run). Pickett's gruesome discovery of Alden's body is followed almost immediately by the stage-managed arrest of Missy by Sheriff Kyle McLanahan. Both Missy and Earl have done plenty to earn the enmity of their neighbors, so Missy's arrest benefits McLanahan's bid for re-election, but Pickett is surprised to find county attorney Lisa Rich already convinced the case is solid. Pickett could use the help of his friend Nate Romanowski, but they are on the outs. Meanwhile, Romanowski, hunted by the widow of a man he killed, finds his withdrawal from the world has endangered others. Box parlays a heady mix of Wyoming politics and the advent of wind power into a deadly brew. This engaging series just keeps getting better with each new entry. Author tour.

Disappointed
Although I have read all of CJ Box's novels and, for the most part, have thoroughly enjoyed each of them, this book really disturbed me. In the other novels, the fact that Mary Beth's mother Missy, regardless of her actions, avowed favoritism and narcissistic/sociopathic behavior has been tolerated and even DEFENDED, and she was allowed to have a relationship with her granddaughters as though simply through her blood relation every other heinous, immoral or contemptible act was immaterial sets a VERY poor example in doing what is morally right. Therefore, for Joe Pickett, who is a solid, moral and GOOD character to allow Missy to get away with MURDER in this book without even telling his wife or Nate the truth, makes me sick. I was extremely disappointed in the author this time....especially because it makes me wonder if the author thinks this is HEALTHY emotional and mental behavior. You have no choice in who you are born to...to simply say every bad deed is erased by blood is a form of psychological sickness. As someone who comes from such a background, I would no more try to have a relationship with certain members of my family than I would were Charles Manson my father. They are incapable of having a normal, giving relationship and it causes dysfunction and pain to the others involved, especially children like Missy's grandchildren. I hope people don't read this and think it is the proper way to think or live.
Another excellent book in the Joe Picket series.
