A highly original artist, André Kertész (1894–1985), was one of the pioneers of ‘spontaneous’ photography. Eschewing the dogmatic positions of existing schools and movements he let himself be guided only by his intuition, drawing on his private life for inspiration. His quest for visual authenticity led to the invention of an innovative visual language.
