Publisher Description

"[A] huge and sprawling tale of horror." —The New York Times Book Review

Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches—a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women.

Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale that challenges everything we believe in.

Kate is a fantastic narrator!

And Anne Rice has written a book to get lost in. I did listen to this on a faster speed because if you listen at regular speed the southern drawl with the long syllables and vowels makes this a very long book to listen to. The narrator is really great at capturing distinct vocal differences between the characters. I did get bored in the beginning with all the historical elements and paused listening to it for several months and I recently started again and sped up the audio and I’ve enjoyed it a lot more, since. Can’t wait to listen to Lasher!

Awesome Narration, Gripping Story

I almost didn’t take a chance on this due to other reviews saying the narrator’s style annoyed them. But I love this novel and unabridged is all I bother with, so I listened to the preview. The narrator is a little monotone in the first few minutes but then that stopped and she won me over entirely. I love when they do different voices for characters if they aren’t too odd and she does this very well. It is a very subjective thing to like or not like a narrator, but a few reviews by those who don’t like it do not mean someone else will agree. Listen to the preview. If you love this novel, give it a shot. I can’t wait to get back to it each day and I will listen to it more than once.

Witching Who?

I really do not like her voice for this book. Really would like my $35 returned. I read the book in a shorter time than I'm listening, and my app keeps skipping chapters - can't finish it soon enough. Actually, I can delete but want my $35 back!
