Publisher Description
This true modern masterpiece is built around the two fateful words that make up the title and herald the end - “Alas, Babylon.” When a nuclear holocaust ravages the United States, a thousand years of civilization are stripped away overnight, and tens of millions of people are killed instantly.
But for one small town in Florida, miraculously spared, the struggle is just beginning, as men and women of all backgrounds join together to confront the darkness. Will Patton's narration paints this classic tale as an ominous picture of the terrible possibilites of the nuclear age.

Remember Duck and Cover Drills?
Seeing the published date, 1959, and thus passing on this re-cycled novel would be a mistake! Fast forward to 2011, and what we now know of NUCLEAR winters, the story IS naively optimistic (Cormac McCarthy's The Road probably more realistic), and less a cautionary tale of the ominous possiblities of a nuclear attack--than an instructive tale of surviving, and BEING PREPARED for, a devastating and isolating attack of Mother Nature...think Katrina. Characters a little one dimensional, and I would say sexist--but it was circa '59, and Gloria Steinem still had a few years. Still TIMELY; great thought provoking read (you may find yourself stocking your survival supplies), very clean writing, spot-on narration. Maybe it wasn't so naive after all...the last sentence, the main character turns "to face the thousand year night." hmmmm....
Great book
I was very surprised at how well this 50 year old book held up. Just great, i couldn't wait to hear more of it.
One of the best post apacolyspe novels
I read the book when I was in the eighth grade nearly 40 years ago. It has recurred in my thoughts more than any other book except the Bible. I've listened to the audio and still find in impactful even though it was written in a time when personal responsibility was more prevalent than today.
The narration is excellent.
