Pedestrian Deposit

About Pedestrian Deposit

Pedestrian Deposit is a Los Angeles-based duo whose work can equally be described as harsh noise, modern composition, electro-acoustic, and performance art. A study in extreme contrasts, Jonathan Borges creates controlled feedback as well as sparse drones using an array of crude electronics and tape loops, while Shannon Kennedy plays an array of self-designed instruments, including bowed metal frames and violins constructed from tree branches. Early releases such as 2006's Fatale were recorded by Borges solo; Kennedy's amplified wood and metal instruments and bowing techniques add a striking presence to the duo's performances, as well as haunting, ethereal textures to recordings such as 2019's Dyers' Hands. Borges began Pedestrian Deposit as a solo noise project in 2000, adding unrelated layers of electronic sound together. He began issuing tapes and CD-Rs through his own Monorail Trespassing label in 2001, and Pedestrian Deposit's sound grew to incorporate field recordings, tape manipulation, and other elements. Early releases on other labels included an RRRecords Recycled cassette, a split tape with the Cherry Point on Troniks (both 2003), and a trio of albums on Hospital Productions. Following 2006's Fatale (a Hospital/Hanson Records co-release), Pedestrian Deposit went on hiatus for two years, resurfacing in 2008 as a duo. 2009's Austere signaled the shift in PD's sound and approach, incorporating more elements of drone and contemporary classical. Since then, the duo have consistently performed at noise and experimental festivals, including No Fun Fest and the Milwaukee Noise Festival, in addition to playing shows at both traditional and makeshift venues. East Fork / North Fork was released in 2010, and LP Kithless appeared on Arbor in 2012. Eleventh Hour, an LP edition of a 2013 cassette, was released by Gilgongo Records in 2015. The Architector also appeared that year, and Dyers' Hands surfaced in 2019, both on Monorail Trespassing. Also in 2019, the duo made a guest appearance on clipping.'s There Existed an Addiction to Blood. ~ Paul Simpson
