About LCD Soundsystem

Led by producer, singer, songwriter, and DFA Records cofounder James Murphy, the NYC dance-rock band LCD Soundsystem taught hipsters and indie kids how to dance in the 2000s. • Hailing from New Jersey, Murphy attended New York University and was offered a job writing for a then-fledgling sitcom called Seinfeld when he was 22. He turned it down. • Murphy formed LCD Soundsystem in 2002. They debuted that year with the tongue-in-cheek single “Losing My Edge,” inspired by Murphy's conflicted feelings about copycat NYC DJs playing the obscure records he liked to spin. • The group earned a Grammy nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album for their 2005 self-titled debut album. The single “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House” went Top 40 in the UK. • LCD Soundsystem’s 2007 sophomore LP, Sound of Silver, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart and was named “album of the year” by numerous publications. It earned another Grammy nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album. • Following 2010’s This is Happening—which went Top 10 on the UK pop charts and reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums tally—LCD Soundsystem played a supposed farewell show at Madison Square Garden in 2011. • They returned in 2015 and released American Dream in 2017. The album topped the Billboard 200 pop albums chart and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. The song “tonite” won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording.
