About Flight of the Conchords

While songs about racist dragons, David Bowie, and “business time” may be unconventional fare for most musical duos, they were all part of the special magic of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement’s utterly idiosyncratic and much-loved partnership. Taking advantage of their shared absurd sense of humor, the friends founded Flight of the Conchords while at university in New Zealand in the late ‘90s. Their success on stage and on radio led to an HBO sitcom in 2007, in which they played versions of themselves trying (and mostly failing) to make their fortunes in America. With its abundance of wit and warmth, the show earned the duo a passionate cult following, as did a series of sweetly nutty recordings for Sub Pop. Though McKenzie and Clement moved on to separate projects since the show’s last season in 2009, occasional reunions have kept enthusiasm for the duo at suitably sky-high levels.
