About Cougars

Formed in Bristol, England in the early '60s, the Cougars were a band that specialized in rocked-up versions of pop and classical standards, mostly done as instrumentals. They were signed to Parlophone Records in 1963 (most likely by Ron Richards), and had a modest U.K. hit that year with the single "Saturday Night At The Duckpond," which was actually a rocked-up instrumental of a small section of Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake." This actually put them one up on their Bristol rivals the Eagles, who recorded a lot more but never charted a record. The Cougars cut two more singles for Parlophone, neither of which charted, and an EP, Saturday Night With the Cougars, which also didn't chart. They disbanded in 1964, but their single chart hit can be heard on the See For Miles label's 20 One Hit Wonders. ~ Bruce Eder
