About Ben Sollee

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. One of my earliest musical memories is singing along to Ray Charles’ “Hit the Road Jack” in the car on the way to my grandparent's house in rural Kentucky. I was probably 6 or 7 and it was one of my favorites! What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Ani DiFranco, Up Up Up Up Up Up Fugees, The Score (Expanded Edition) Three of my all-time favorite albums? Hmmm… Paul Simon’s Rhythm of the Saints, The Fugees The Score, and Ani Difranco Up, Up, Up. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Bible Belt” I love the way "Bible Belt" turned out. It’s a gentle but defiant ballad with this deliciously dissonant wind ensemble arrangement. Sonically, they embody the friction my wife and I encountered when we went against the grain of our community. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? One of my most memorable experiences was with Abigail Washburn, Casey Driessen, and Béla Fleck as part of the Sparrow Quartet. We toured in China and Tibet playing wild Szechuan-American folk music. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? There are a few visions I’d love to manifest: ever since I was a kid I’ve dreamed of scoring a Disney movie, visiting a Narwhal in its natural habitat, earning my doctorate, and having a farm.
