Description

An elegant little app to give a wee taste of the TrueDoF range of depth of field calculators.

TrueDoF-Intro shares with its sibling apps the same core features: A clean and clear interface, ease of use, real-time updating of output and, above all (but conveniently hidden under the hood, as it were), the most advanced depth of field algorithm you’ll find on the App Store.

The TrueDoF range is unique in that its calculations can take into account the effects of diffraction. This gives the user a MUCH MORE ACCURATE indication of how sharp the image will be. Of course, if you're not comfortable with this diffraction business, you can simply disable that feature and instead use the app as a traditional depth of field calculator. You'll retain all the fabulous ease of use features!

There's no need for long descriptions here — the app is free, so just play around with it. You'll find you'll never want to go back to the old ways of calculating depth of field.

And if you like this version, wait till you try TrueDoF-Pro! Check it out, and its HUGE list of features, here on the App Store.

What’s New

Version 3.0

• The interface gets an even cleaner, more spacious look. Simply slide the pointers to set focus distance and aperture (the old slider “thumbs” are now gone). Note that you do not need to keep your finger on a pointer as you slide it — you can move your finger to the side as you slide, all the better to see where the pointer is pointing.
• There are all manner of minor changes, including a more elegant colour scheme.
• The app is compatible with iOS 12 and with the various new iPhone X models.

Do remember that this free, pared-down “Intro” version is designed to give a mere taste of the very much more capable “Pro” version. Check it out here on the App Store.

Seems pretty accurate

I've shot controlled diffraction tests through all my cameras, and this seems quite accurate. The only thing I'd note is that it doesn't take pixel size into account. As the individual pixels on a certain size sensor decrease, the noticeable effects of diffraction increase.

Technically it looks about right, but they should specify that the depth of field is still increasing at f16, f22, and so on, even though the image is becoming blurrier, which is an important difference in macro photography where diffraction limited images may be objectively better because wider apertures result in too shallow of a depth of field.

4 out of 5 only because they're treating DOF and diffraction as the same thing, otherwise this looks good and works really well.

Perfect

Simple. Useful. Accurate. Thank you.

Nice GUI, BUT Diffraction does not decrease DOF at high f-stops!

A nice GUI design isn't everything. This app incorrectly shows depth of field decreasing above f/16 with 35mm format. That's not technically accurate: it's quite wrong. Diffraction, due to stopping down very far, does blur the image but does not affect depth of field. DOF continues to increase even as diffraction blur decreases resolution while stopping down. At some point the diffraction blur becomes bigger than the circle of confusion, which is chosen by the photographer for best results (or by textbook value or lens-maker value), but it affects all parts of the picture: at the plane of true focus, in the depth of field, and outside the DOF. At any rate, sometimes you need more depth of field than can be given by staying with your desired circle of confusion, so you may have to sacrifice some resolution to diffraction to get adequate (if less than optimum) resolution in front of and behind the main subject at the plane of focus. Also this app does not go down to macro distances like iDof Calc does.
