"One of the most powerful photography applications that I've seen, one that you'll be using for years and years." - AdoramaTV

The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) helps plan outdoor photography shoots in natural light, particularly landscape and urban scenes. It's a map-centric Sun, Moon and Milky Way calculator: see how the light will fall on the land, day or night, for any location on earth.

Whether you need at-a-glance information on today's sun, moon and Milky Way data for your current location, or need to plan a precise alignment of the full moon for a future shoot, TPE has the tools you need. The combination of augmented reality, line-of-sight analysis and visual search supports the most sophisticated photo planning needs.

Night mode features a 3D representation of the Milky Way, pole stars and major constellations directly over the map, so you can easily visualize exactly how to align your shot.

Research and save your own list of favorite photographic locations, using 7 different map types (including 2 offline maps) and save them in your locations list. Favorite locations are always displayed right on the map.

Advanced features including visual sun and moon search, automatic time zone and elevation detection, correction for atmospheric refraction and height above the horizon, ensuring that you have the best possible information for planning your shoot.

You can even determine when the sun or moon will rise from behind nearby hills and mountains.

Key features:

- Time/direction of sun, moon, and galactic center rise/set
- View azimuth and altitude of sun/moon and the galactic center for any time of day/night

What’s New

Version 4.14.1

4.14.1
- Bug fixes and refinements

4.14
- New: Timeline summary: tapping the Info button at the bottom right of the map displays a new Timeline page with detailed timings of the day's events. This button replaces the info button that previously appeared at the lower right of the timeline itself
- Updated: Tap the Info button, then Settings (top right) to manage your display preferences: you can now select from Sun, Moon, Galactic Center, and choose which events are shown in the timeline
- Updated: Night mode no longer need to be enabled manually - adjust the time of day by dragging on the altitude chart
- New: The Timeline page includes an Event Countdown and Notifications page providing a easy-to-read countdown to key timeline events, plus optional device notifications
- New: You can preview the event countdown for any time, any place, in "Rehearsal Mode", or see/hear live updates in "Live Mode"

The Event Countdown and Notifications feature can be used during the upcoming total eclipse of April 8 to view timing updates for the eclipse contacts, which are of critical importance to photographers. Enable notifications to hear spoken announcements in English or Spanish. In this release, we include announcements for Sunrise, Moonrise, C1, C2, Maximum Eclipse, C3 and C4.

The Notifications Status page shows whether your Notifications settings are configured optimally to receive time sensitive event notifications. When event notifications are enabled, you can view a list of scheduled notifications and delete any you do not wish to receive, or cancel all pending notifications.

A warning indicator is shown if your device location is more than 1.5 km or 1 mile from the location for which the event countdown and pending notifications are configured.

A Note on Notifications:
- You must enable notifications, grant authorization and ensure that your device's focus mode and other settings are configured to allow the notifications to be received and/or heard
- In Rehearsal Mode, notifications are scheduled when you tap Play and canceled upon Pausing. In Live mode, notifications are scheduled relative to the actual clock time of the corresponding events, irrespective of any time you select within the app.
- You can background the app or quit it and notifications will still be received. This is useful for testing your configuration.
- The following events are currently announced in this version: C1 (30m, 5m, 60s, 30s, 15s, 5s), C2 (30m, 15m, 5m, 2m, 60s, 30s, 15s, 5s), Max Eclipse (60s, 30s, 15s, 5s), C3 (60s, 30s, 15s, 5, +15s, +30s, +60s), C4 (30m, 5m, 60s, 30s, 15s, 5s), Sunrise (30m, 15m, 5m, 2m, 60s, 15s, 5s), Moonrise (30m, 15m, 5m, 2m, 60s, 15s, 5s). TPE- essential tool for the informed photographer

Having TPE in the toolbox is really important to me so I make the most of my photography time. Surely happenstance photography ‘happens’ and I like to have my camera with me on a walk about with the dogs or just being out, intentional photography is deliberate and planned. You are still going to get surprises for content but hope to capture photos and videos of landscape and cityscape with the best opportunity for them to make a memorable impression. I am very please with Skyfire and when I find a quiet morning in the winter with little wind and a good chance of color I am headed to the lake to see if some long exposure photography can bring out some amazing photos with mirror like reflections of the landscape and sky. So many opportunities to use it for both day and night photography, it really is a tool for the informed photographer.

For City/Landscape Photographs

It is great to show you the elevation and “Flow” of the land. Also it has 4 types of maps showing this in Google & 2 using Apple maps. You can see what you are getting into, but you must remember the this is just a map form yesterday, new trails or changes are not shown. Also the view is of the elevation is great as long as they haven’t built anything or grasses/trees grown too much, which is not true for Charlotte,NC. All this being said, I related the program a 5 Star because it shows you so many points of view, the sun & moon flow in the sky at a specific time and a better location to at least start looking for a good spot to get the frame you want. This program is great for starting a plan from your house and then going out for the picture.

Years of use and service

I think I have been using this app for more than 5 years. I have gotten so many great moon rises both morning and night. It is so helpful for planning shoots. A portrait with the sun or moon in the distance is memorable. It has gotten a little busy over the years with all the features but well worth the extra strain on my aging eyes. The developer loves this app and they put their heart and sole into it trying to make it the best it can be. (App Request: Dummy mode: only display what can be used in the 3 hours.)
Worth every penny and will last you several camera bodies. This is one of the first apps I recommend to my photo friends and install on my new apple devices. Enjoy.
