Description

Newton Calendar is a companion app to Newton Mail.

Existing Newton Mail users will have all the calendar events synced automatically upon installing the app. No setup required. Works with Google and Exchange (EWS) Calendars.

How Newton Calendar helps you be on top of your game:

● ‘Schedule View’ will help you plan better. Know about your upcoming events and free slots with a quick glance.
● Creating an event has never been this delightful. Just tap on the date, type the event name and hit ‘Done’.
● Say goodbye to long “sequential forms”. Add notes, location and other details with ease.
● Newton Calendar is indispensable when on the move. Notify the organizer when you’re running late or if you cannot make it, with just a tap.
● Reliable notifications ensure that you’re always on top of your game.
● Access multiple calendars in one place. Manage any number of Gmail, Google Apps and Exchange (EWS) calendars.

Decent

I like the clean interface but it’s use is very limited for me. For example, even as I’m typing this review, it’s got a glitch and is showing white text on a white background. So I can’t actually see what I’m typing. This sort of thing happens occasionally in this app. Sometimes an input box will fail to show up so I have to go back and then reselect the notes or whatever so that it reloads the screen and hopefully shows the input. Also, it’s especially limited because only gmail and exchange calendars show, so my subscribed calendars and iOS calendars aren’t visible in this app. Promising but limited for me.

Beautiful but buggy

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ UX
This app is beautiful and easy to use. The UX is mostly great. Adding events is easy with some nice AI to interpret dates and time to speed up the process.

⭐️⭐️ for bugs
There are several bugs that have persisted for months on end.
Syncing problems: Syncing requires opening the app. I get notifications for events that no longer exist and haven’t for days or weeks. Sometimes canceled or deleted events don’t go away at all.
Setting a location is a feature but somehow has never worked. It will show locations that were added outside of this app, though.

Missing common features:
- Cannot move events between calendars
- Years later, still cannot sync iCloud account

Don’t get me wrong. I have mad respect for the Newton team. I realize Newton has been though rough a rollercoaster ride over the years, shutting down, coming back, and then all over again. I get that the mail app is the core product that should regained lost ground first. But the state this app is in has made it almost unusable compared to the standard iCal app. It’s been almost a year without any updates. The syncing issues are the dealbreaker for me. If I can’t reliably see what’s in my calendar, even after manually syncing from opening the app (as opposed to watching notifications), then I can’t really rely on it to tell me what my day holds. So until this gets revamped, I’m moving back to iCal.

Solid Calendar App That Does The Basics Well

I love that i don’t have to rely on fetch for my Google calendar updates. It’s a downside of many calendar apps on iOS that rely on system settings that no longer allow google push notifications, this app navigates around that problem beautifully.

I’m also very fond of the UI! At first it struck me as simple, but the more I used it I realized it added a beauty and elegance to its design. The fully expanded widget is my favorite calendar widget I’ve used on iOS.

I’ve seen some say they don’t like the icon because it doesn’t look like a calendar app. I think the newton mail app and the calendar app side by side complement each other and add a sense of continuity between them. It makes me happy that they are two separate apps so they can brighten up my home screen like that!

There is always room for improvement in any app. The one thing I would suggest presently is the ability to set custom notification times within the app and not just from the drop down of preselected options. But overall keep up the great work!
