The SteelDrivers’ second LP, and last with singer/guitarist Chris Stapleton, is firmly rooted in the proud bluegrass tradition of banjo, fiddle, and mandolin. However, this lively Nashville band refuses to be fenced in, veering boldly into country-soul territory (“Where Rainbows Never Die”) and rock attitude (“Good Corn Liquor”). But at their best they race into straight bluegrass with infectious abandon (“The Reckless Side of Me”). The epic “Ghosts of Mississippi” defies any pigeonhole; it’s full of hot harmonies, wailing fiddle, and mad passion.
