South London's Echo Lake, a quintet led by the duo of guitarist Thom Hill and singer Linda Jarvis, create shimmering textures of dream-pop and shoegaze that utilize the usual reserves of heavy reverb, angelic vocals, and guitars and keyboards that blur into a haze worthy of My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Beach House, Cocteau Twins, and Ride. A pop sense underlines the girl-group bop of "Last Song of the Year," while "Another Day" explodes with joy after Jarvis is done bewitching with vocal lines that ascend to the heavens. "Even the Blind" suggests a gentler, more refined version of The Raveonettes. "Further Down" emits a breezy 4AD Records atmosphere. "Monday 5AM" transforms into a dizzy array of tones that resemble nightmarish alarm clocks. "Just Kids" plays like a solemn prayer, with a cathedral-like reverb and droning organ adding to the out-of-body experience. (On a tragic note, drummer Pete Hayes died at age 25 just as this album was released.)
