Hollie Cook in Dub (Prince Fatty Presents)

Hollie Cook is a sprightly young chanteuse from London’s West End with a silvery voice that rings out sweetly even as she delivers tales of heartbreak and loss. Her self-titled full length, released on Mr. Bongo Records in the summer of 2011, was an openhearted dose of winsome reggae. It conjured the hazy atmosphere and loping stepper’s rhythms of mid-‘70s lovers rock while remaining firmly rooted in the contemporary pop scene. While Cook’s vocals were consistently winning, much of her debut’s charm sprang from the impeccably arranged, echo-laced arrangements of producer Prince Fatty. On Prince Fatty Presents Hollie Cook in Dub, a dub-wise version of her debut, Fatty’s talents as a producer and knob-twiddling remixer are brought to the fore. His moody versions bring out the ominous tones lurking in the shadows of Cook’s sun-dappled compositions. On the grooving “Sugarwater Dub,” deep sub-bass rumbles, strange aquatic sound effects, and basso-profundo interjections from dancehall DJ Horseman combine to create a surprisingly ominous soundscape reminiscent of dub pioneer Dennis Bovell’s experimental early-‘80s productions.
