At Last

At Last

Cyndi Lauper remakes 20th-century pop standards into showcases for her interpretative skill and inimitable voice—with a few surprises along the way. She adds Latin-jazz flair to Maurice Williams’ “Stay” while staying true to its doo-wop roots; gives the ‘60s standard “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” an ominous slow-burn reading; and transforms “On the Sunny Side of the Street” into light-stepping ska. She approaches bruised ballads like “Walk on By” and Jacques Brel’s “If You Go Away” with tenderness and subtlety, revealing her range and depth.
