Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale, a Faustian story of a soldier’s devastating pact with the Devil, is given an inventive refresh by former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters. With great imagination and skill, he acts out all three parts—Narrator, Soldier, and Devil—in a voice that’s at once brilliantly comic, ominously calm, and viciously caustic. And his own reshaping of much of the original translation adds ample wit, irony, and tragedy: His portrayal of the soldier’s desperation in defeat is truly harrowing. The razor-sharp Waters is joined by a superb ensemble who give Stravinsky’s sparkling, wild score one of the finest, most searing performances in decades.
