Delbert McClinton’s been turning out his uniquely Texan blend of blues and soul since the early ‘70s, and Prick of the Litter is a perfect distillation of the styles he’s been dealing in for decades. The straight-up blues shuffle of “Don’t Do It” and the smooth, ‘70s-tinged R&B of “Doin’ What You Do” are right in Del’s wheelhouse. But so are the rough-and-ready barroom banger “Skip Chaser,” the gently jazzy “San Miguel,” and the slow-burning “Neva.”
