The de facto title track to Boney James’ The Beat is a nod to Sergio Mendes’ 1968 version with Brasil 66. The dynamic tenor saxophonist’s 12th album reflects a broadly metropolitan sensibility similar to the Brazilian maestro’s music and popular style. Rippling percussion, soft keyboards, and the album’s sole soprano saxophone appearance help usher in the opening track: a warm interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing.” Charismatic spoken-word artist The Floacist and seductive R&B vocalist Raheem DeVaughn contribute to the evening jams on “The Midas (This Is Why)” and “Maker of Love,” respectively. A highlight is James reuniting with trumpeter and longtime comrade Rick Braun to stretch out with a funky take on “Batucada (The Beat).”
