Tom Chaplin’s worried, expressive tenor was Keane’s secret weapon, and on his debut solo album he sounds like he’s been through the mill. It’s a collection of haunted, sparkly, and reverberant pop songs exploring some hard-won life lessons. Some are sung with regret—the folky “Solid Gold” is a particularly rueful moment—and some with benign acceptance, as on “Love Wins.” But even in his darkest moments, the bitter wisdom of each face-palm verse leads to a huge resolute chorus—“Cheating Death”—to remind him there’s always hope.
