Stages (Live)

Stages (Live)

Even though Triumph turned out big song after big song, the band’s success was largely founded on their legendary live performances, several of which are preserved on Stages. Recorded from 1981 to 1984, the album makes the case that this power trio geared their entire operation toward their stage show. Aside from their innovative lighting rig (which can be glimpsed on the album cover), the band wrote songs that were designed to come alive in arenas. The heart-pounding, fist-pumping riffs of “Never Surrender,” “Lay It on the Line,” and “Follow Your Heart” only become more momentous when shared with thousands of fans. Some of the band’s most explosive songs—like “When the Lights Go Down” and “Rock and Roll Machine”—actually borrowed the excitement of a rock concert for their subject matter. Even though Triumph were renowned for their momentous, back-to-basics anthems, these live recordings highlight the group’s prowess as musicians. For a three-piece, they bring tremendous thunder to the stage; “Magic Power” and “Fight the Good Fight” are just two songs that reveal the overlooked intricacies of their playing.
