Greenland

Greenland

Greenland isn’t an exotic pop record or anything, despite a title that suggests something remote and unusual. Cracker’s David Lowery is a classic rocker at heart with every part of the genre at his disposal. He comes cruising through country-rock on the opening track, “Something You Ain’t Got,” with pedal steel and harmonies from Whiskeytown’s Caitlin Cary. “Maggie” swells with a keyboard-supported drifter’s backbeat. “Fluffy Lucy” strolls at a slower but no less agitated pace. “The Riverside” and “Minotaur” draw on a noir drama just south of the Afghan Whigs. “Gimme One More Chance” turns towards funk-driven hard rock with an epic, climbing guitar solo climax from Lowery’s compatriot Johnny Hickman. “I’m So Glad She Ain’t Never Coming Back” and “Sidi Ifni” drift into the incense clouds of psychedelia with keyboards drifting into space and guitars that growl with old-style FM radio waves shifting in the Pink Floyd air. “I Need Better Friends” sports Lowery’s wit. “Night Falls” recalls Lowery’s buddy Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse with its muted tone and distorted vocal. Greenland kicks in at every gear.
