The Allnighter

The Allnighter

Glenn Frey’s second solo album finds this Eagles cofounder moving even further away from the country-rock that defined that band’s sound throughout the ’70s. This 1984 release is very much a product of its era—lots of drum-machine beats and swirling synthesizers consort with blues-inscribed guitar riffs and heady brass sections. But that’s not a bad thing because Frey’s songwriting and performing virtuosity soars, from the string-swelling grace of “Lover’s Moon” to the stars-and-stripes fist-pumper “Better in the USA” to the soul-pop tune “I Got Love.”
