Travel II - EP

On this second release in its Travel EP series, the Christian alt-rock trio Future of Forestry voyages deeper into its atmospheric, Britpop-influenced sound. Vocalist/instrumentalist Eric Owyoung applies contrasting layers of guitars, keyboards and percussion to create a shifting wash. Booming drums and clattering foot-stomps add urgency to the dreamy textures and wistful melodies in “Hills of Indigo Blue” and “So Close So Far.” “Holiday” is less serene and more jittery, accented with clarion-call guitar. The chunky acoustic strums powering “Set Your Sails” and the sea-shanty-like lilt beneath “Slow Your Breath Down” bring Paul McCartney’s early solo releases to mind. Except for the yearning “Someday,” the spiritual themes present on FoF’s previous EP are less overt here. Instead, Owyoung beckons the listener into impressionistic lyric seascapes with a nostalgic tint. His keening, supple voice hovers between wonder and serenity, adding emotional color to his sometimes opaque lyrics. All of the above makes Travel, Vol. 2 a captivating trip into exotic sonic regions.
